Mac OS X Lion – How to Enable The Root User
on September 8, 2011 at 7:12 pmPosted In: Mac OS X Lion
Since I posted my blog the other day about the sign in error with the root user in Mac OS X Lion, I have been asked a few times on how to enable the root user. So now I present to you just how to enable the root user.
- From the Apple menu click “System Preferences“
- From the View menu click “Users & Groups”
- Click the “lock” and authenticate as an administrator account
- Click “Login Options”
- Click the “Edit” or “Join” button at the bottom right
- Click the “Open Directory Utility” button
- Click the “lock” in the Directory Utility window
- Enter an administrator account name and password, then click OK
- Click “Enable Root User” from the Edit menu
- Enter the root password you wish to use in both the Password and Verify fields, then click OK

the directory utility window does not have anywhere to enter a username or password
I’ve authenticated the admin account in Directory Utility, but the “Enable Root User” is still greyed out. Am I missing something?
